7 Annoying Carp Fishing Headaches (1-to-1 Fix With Matt)
Let’s fix some common problems you can have in your carp fishing.
Although carp fishing isn’t difficult to get into, there are lots of details that you need to get right in order to maximise your chances. Over the years I’ve made every mistake imaginable and learned my lessons the hard way! During this tuition session with one of our guests, we went through some issues and questions that Niall was wrestling with which helped to clear his mind of doubt so that he could put an effective strategy into place and catch consistently all week long.

STOP Using Inline Leads Like This (Here’s WHY)
Переглядів 58 тис.21 день тому
I never use an inline lead straight out of the packet. The problem with standard inline leads is that the carp can use the weight of the lead to throw the rig. On certain waters, it’s not an issue and you can catch plenty of carp. But when you go to a new water, with more pressured fish, or fewer carp, a standard inline lead setup can let you down. There are several ways to transform a standard...
How to Spool 3 Reels (EVENLY) With 1000m of Line (using backing line)
Переглядів 10 тис.Місяць тому
Here’s the perfect method to split 1000m of mono between 3 reels when you're using backing line. Each time we put new line on our reels, we’ve got the same old problem of trying to fit 1000m of line across 3 spools. It’s particularly tricky on big pit reels when the total capacity of the spools is greater than the amount of new line we’ve got on. The best way to make sure your reels are perfect...
100% Bombproof Carp Rig (ANYTIME / ANYWHERE)

This rig gives you a guaranteed presentation and keeps you fishing in all conditions. The rig is a variation on the mono D with a blowback tube to create a long D. This makes the bottom bait sit lower down, near the bend of the hook and helps the rig to flip and turn faster and give great hook holds. This rig is impossible to tangle and will keep you fishing in all sorts of conditions. And if I...

    Hey Matt, this video's a decade old now, but has anything changed? Same principles or have you tweaked your methods as tech/hook styles move on?

    • @matthewcollinsangler
      @matthewcollinsangler Годину тому

      Hi mate, well, the principles, tools and technique are exactly the same. What I’ve learnt over the years is that many anglers make their hooks worse when they try this, it takes a lot of skill to sharpen a hook well. Nowadays at my lake, anglers prefer to change their hooks rather than attempt to sharpen them.

    • @chrisjpainter
      @chrisjpainter Годину тому

      @@matthewcollinsangler Same with chainsaw chains! Too many people are just happy to chuck them, rather than taking the time to learn a skill, even if it costs them in the long run. I've had a few failures with some Twister Long Shanks of late. Great hooks - when sharp! Mine seem to be good for only one fish before the point bends out, so they need a fair bit of work after every fish.

      Hi mate, I prefer to tie the non-slip mono loop knot as it’s what I’m good at and it’s plenty strong enough. If you are more familiar with the perfection loop then try that but test it first (deadlift test of 4kg should be plenty 👍).

  • @BigRed-dr6we

    Knotless knot. You must make the first turn away from where the eye is folded to the shank or it will act as a pinch point and cut the line. I was losing fish this way until I was shown what I was doing wrong.

      @@mikeford6611 Loving your buzz for the sport man! I would never recommend doing what your bailiff suggests. At best it’s unnecessary, or counterproductive and if done wrong, potentially dangerous. If you are losing fish on that rig, it’s because your hook point is blunt or damaged. Please bear in mind that my version of what is sharp is different to 95% of anglers. Unless you’re really good at hook sharpening, only use the rig once then tie a fresh one with a new hook. If fishing over gravel the hook will be ruined on the retrieve anyway so don’t re-cast. Do not move the rig once it’s in place. • @matthewcollinsangler
      @matthewcollinsangler 2 дні тому

      Carp fishing is very different to coarse fishing. In carp fishing we are relying on the rig to hook the carp automatically. We are not sitting watching the rod tip and striking as you would do when ledgering. Carp can only hook themselves on a very sharp hook and if it’s not sharp enough they will get away with it countless times. In my experience as angler and lake owner, changing your hooks regularly should transform your results if not then there is something not quite right with your rig 😊

    Would it be possible to use a wet cloth rather than dunking the whole spool in water or have you not noticed any negative effects by doing this?

    • @matthewcollinsangler
      @matthewcollinsangler 2 дні тому

      In the past, during long periods of hot weather I’ve used sweatbands soaked in water to wrap around the spools when I’ve had rods out of the water and this does work well. A wet cloth draped over the spool will help but it’s not quite as effective. I have no qualms about dousing the spool with water. Just avoid soaking the reel body itself as if it’s not sealed it can shorten the life of the reel.

    • @Faithless655
      @Faithless655 День тому

      @@matthewcollinsangler good point, I suppose if you compare how much water you're putting on the spool to how much water hits your reels in the rain it's probably relatively minor. Plus there are anglers that put their rod set ups out in the lake for various reasons have to contend with lake water as well. Thank you for replying

    I'd been using Fluro exclusively for ~12 -13 years but your recent-ish vids on moving to Mono convinced me to try it so i to got the new Nash Armourline. I spooled it up exactly the way you showed in your recent vids and explained to the chap just now and i'm seeing line starting to twist appear. I am a backwinder after having gotten used to it with Fluro to try and escape the twisting which Fluro hates. I'd had enough of the line twist issue with Fluro which is why i went back to mono and while it's not as bad so far it's definitely an issue with this line so far. I'll have to check my rollers but pretty sure they were still moving when i checked a few weeks back.

    • @matthewcollinsangler
      @matthewcollinsangler 5 днів тому

      Hi mate, I suggested to Niall that he focused on keeping the line wet before he actually did anything (opening the bail arm, casting, boating a rig out etc.) When mono gets dry it behaves quite badly but wet mono behaves quite nicely. Niall found that by keeping his line wetter it behaved much better for him. Certain monos can take a set and go a bit bongly (technical term 😂) with repeated casting. The Bullet is an example of this but I found that by regular cutting back a couple of metres, this problem is easily solved. We definitely had to cut back the Armourline to get him back on track. The most important qualities in any line for me are strength, abrasion resistance and sinkability (if that’s a word lol.), Armourline ticks all these boxes and if you keep it wet you should get on well with it. I certainly have no worries about spooling up with it when my stock of Bullet runs out.

    Funny old thing line twist. The line has to be twisted somewhere! If it is straight when it's cast of the spool then when you wind in it is twisted onto the spool. And vice versa, ie if not twisted on the spool the when cast the line has twists. Also the twists can be transferred along the line when you real in!
